There’s something about a beer garden that just feels like summer.
Maybe it’s the sunshine, the picnic tables, the sound of glasses clinking or the fact that beer simply tastes better outdoors. Whatever it is, beer gardens are one of the best ways to enjoy great beer with great company.
But like any shared drinking space, there are a few unwritten rules that help keep the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Let’s get into it!
Claim Your Space, Not the Whole Table
Beer gardens are designed for gathering. Long communal tables are part of the charm, which means sharing space is often expected.
A few simple habits go a long way:
- Leave room for others when seating is limited
- Keep bags, jackets and personal items off extra seats
- Be mindful of how much table space your group is taking up
If the garden is busy, a little flexibility helps everyone find a place to enjoy their pint.
Dress for the Weather (and the Beer)
Unlike a climate-controlled taproom, beer gardens put you at the mercy of the elements.
Before heading out:
- Check the forecast
- Bring sunglasses or sunscreen if needed
- Have a light layer handy for cooler evenings
- Stay hydrated throughout the day
Nothing cuts a beer session short faster than too much sun and not enough water.
Pace Yourself in the Heat
Warm weather can make alcohol hit a little differently.
A crisp lager on a sunny afternoon may go down easy, but higher temperatures can increase dehydration and make drinks feel stronger than expected.
A few smart moves:
- Alternate beer with water
- Eat while you drink
- Pay attention to ABV
- Slow down and enjoy each pour
Summer drinking is a marathon, not a sprint.
Choose Beers Built for Sunshine
Not every beer shines in 85-degree weather.
While there’s no wrong beer to drink in a beer garden, certain styles tend to feel especially refreshing when temperatures rise. Lighter bodies, crisp finishes and bright flavors can make a huge difference on a hot afternoon.
Some warm-weather favorites include:
- Pilsners – Clean, crisp and incredibly refreshing
- Helles Lagers – Smooth, balanced and easy-drinking
- Kölsch – Light-bodied with subtle fruit notes and a dry finish
- Wheat Beers – Soft, refreshing and often packed with citrus character
- Blonde Ales – Approachable and easy to enjoy in the sun
- Session IPAs – Hoppy flavor without the heavier alcohol content
That doesn’t mean stouts, porters or barrel-aged beers are off-limits. Drink what you enjoy. Just know that a rich 11% imperial stout might feel a little different when you’re sitting in direct sunlight than it would next to a fireplace in January.
Mind the Kids, Dogs and Other Guests
Although Druthers does not allow pets at our locations since we also serve food, many beer gardens welcome families AND four-legged friends. It’s part of what can make the atmosphere so relaxed and inviting.
That said, everyone shares responsibility for keeping the space enjoyable.
Remember to:
- Check ahead if pets are allowed
- Keep dogs(if allowed) leashed and close by
- Clean up after pets (if allowed)
- Supervise children appropriately
- Respect personal space
The goal is simple: make sure your good time doesn’t become someone else’s inconvenience.
Know Your Glassware
Even outdoors, presentation matters.
Many breweries choose specific glassware for a reason. Different styles help showcase aromas, maintain carbonation and enhance the drinking experience.
A few quick reminders:
- Hold the glass by the base or side when possible
- Avoid touching the rim
- Return glassware to designated collection areas if requested
Small details can make a surprisingly big difference.
Leave the Beer Garden Better Than You Found It
One of the easiest ways to be a great beer garden guest is to clean up after yourself.
Before heading out:
- Toss empty cans or cups where appropriate
- Clear away napkins and food wrappers
- Return trays if the venue requests it
- Double-check that you haven’t left anything behind
It helps the staff, the next guests and the overall atmosphere.
And don’t forget…
Beer gardens are all about good beer, good company and good vibes.
Be respectful, stay hydrated and enjoy the moment. Whether you’re sipping a crisp lager or trying a new seasonal brew, there’s no better way to celebrate warm-weather drinking.
Cheers!
