Beer Flights 101

Whether you’re visiting a new-to-you brewery or sampling an ever-changing tap list from your favorite brewery – ordering a beer flight is the perfect way to get a lay of the land.

And while it may seem that you can’t go wrong when tasting four to five beers, there are some things you should know.

The Basics

The Glassware

The glasses used in beer flights typically range in size from 2 ounces to 6 ounces. They can also be several different shapes. While glasses are most often a mini-sized pint, they may be mini mugs, snifters and pilsners too.

The Paddle

The samples are most often delivered on a wooden paddle. But breweries can get creative with this! It may also be a tray, tree stump, metal wire stands or anything else that can be fashioned to hold mini pints of beer.

The Price

Together, your selections typically add up to about a pint of beer. Though, you could say enjoying a wide selection of light, mild and dark drinks from local or national breweries is priceless!

Now that you know the essentials, here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of your tasting.

The Dos and Don’ts of Beer Flights

Do Chat With the Staff

Instead of ordering blindly, consult the staff to get the most out of your craft beer flight experience.

Don’t Chug the Beer

A beer flight is like a wine tasting. You want to savor the taste and aroma of each beer. And if you find one that you love, you can order a full glass after the flight.

Do Drink in Order

The order in which the samples are presented on the board is intentional. Most likely the flight will be arranged from the lightest to the darkest beer (left to right). It’s recommended that you drink the lightest beer first to prevent darker beers from overpowering the taste of the lighter ones.

Don’t Overthink It

You may be a devoted pale ale drinker, but your tastes may expand after a 5 ounce sample of a porter. Don’t let your preconceived notions about a style of beer prevent you from tasting all the beers included in your flight.

Do Enjoy Yourself!

Ordering a flight of beers is the perfect way to explore different beers and expand your palate. Be open minded and find your new favorite!

Cheers!
